James Howard DeLoach was born the seventh of eight children to Edward and Richie DeLoach in Clearfield, Utah, on December 22, 1964. He was given new life as God’s child, baptized in God’s Triune name by the Rev. D. A. Kuhn on February 14, 1965, at Trinity Lutheran Church-Layton, Utah. James was confirmed as a communicant member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hermitage, Tennessee, by Rev. Stephen C. Streufert.
James attended elementary school in Massachusetts, Idaho, and Tennessee. He completed Jr. and Sr. High School in Hermitage, Tennessee (a suburb of Nashville), before attending Concordia University – Seward, NE, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1986. During his summer breaks from High School and while at Concordia, James spent his summers working on his sister’s farm in Casey, Iowa, where he helped take care of hogs and cattle, while also assisting with field work.
In 1987, James attended Concordia Seminary-St. Louis, serving his vicarage year at Our Savior Lutheran Church-Lake Worth, Florida, receiving his Master of Divinity in 1991, and remaining another year by invitation to pursue the Master of Sacred Theology. On August 9, 1992, James was ordained into the Office of the Holy Ministry and installed as the pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church-Taylorsville, North Carolina. He served St. Paul until 1994, when he received the call to serve at Concordia University-Nebraska.
From 1994 to 1998, he served in Student Services at Concordia, advancing to become Director of Student Life, where he trained and supervised around fifty staff members, had oversight of security and upkeep of all the resident halls, dealt with all matters of student discipline, and was tasked with establishing and maintaining the budget for his area of responsibility. He also taught two sections of Introduction to New Testament each semester for the Theology Division.
From 1998 to 2003, James shepherded the dual parish of Immanuel Lutheran Church-Louisville, NE, and St. Paul Lutheran Church-Weeping Water, NE. After St. Paul entered a dual parish with a smaller congregation, he remained the pastor of Immanuel-Louisville from 2003 until 2008, when he accepted the Divine Call to serve Zion Lutheran Church and School-Kearney, NE, where he continues to serve today. Since 2012 he has also served as a regional Vice President for the NE District.
James entered Holy Marriage with Carol Lynn Allwardt on July 13, 1986. Carol, born March 20, 1963, to Rev. Theodore and Marian Allwardt, enjoys reading, trying new recipes, thrift stores, and music. She currently teaches Pre-Kindergarten at Zion Lutheran School, while also directing the Adult Vocal Choir and the Adult Handbell Choir. They are blessed with two children. Abigail Grace, born August 19, 1999, is a freshman at Kearney High School. She enjoys acting, reading, school, sports (softball, basketball, and track), and music. Zachariah James, born December 28, 2001, is a 7th grader at Zion. He enjoys watching and playing basketball, video games, running, and singing.
